At Audubon Texas, bird conservation is at the core of what we do. But why birds?

Birds are in nearly every ecosystem on the planet. They’re pollinators, seed dispersers, predators, and prey. And within the network of connections that make up an ecosystem birds are uniquely positioned to act as a sort of environmental mirror for the health of the land.

This makes what’s good for birds good for entire ecosystems, which includes us humans. And it means if you have to pick a place to focus your time, energy, and resources in the face of ever growing conservation challenges, starting with birds makes a lot of sense.

We focus on birds because it’s bigger than birds. It’s smart conservation for the state we love.
