Boots on the Ground in Texas Communities are What Makes a Difference.

by Chloe Crumley, Engagement Manager

Audubon Chapters are the boots on the ground across the Lone Star State, and we are lucky to have local Audubon chapters and organizations that support the Audubon mission. Chapters know the community, the needs, and the birds. They can share the message of bird conservation and make true change whether it is planting native gardens in their neighborhoods or hosting Birding 101 classes in Spanish. The work of chapters is vital as we work towards building a flock of diverse Audubon members that move up the ladder of engagement.

For over 30 years, Audubon Foundation of Texas (AFT) has been financially assisting Texas Chapters to support their work in key areas including environmental education, community science, habitat restoration, native plants, community outreach, and conservation.

In fall of 2025, AFT awarded over $15,000 to chapters across Texas and an additional $5,000 worth of gift cards from HEB! With this money our Texas Chapters will work on a variety of projects across seven different ecoregions in Texas in 10 different communities. Some of the projects include:

  • Habitat restoration at Langley Island, on Blackland Prairie, and High Island
  • Binoculars for youth and adult programming
  • Purchasing Lights Out, Texas! Yard signs
  • Support for Christmas Bird Count activities

And so much more!

We are proud of the work chapters are doing on the ground in Texas communities to build the flock and create spaces welcoming for all. Birding is a gateway into nature and through additional programming, Audubon chapters are working towards building inviting spaces where everyone can enjoy nature and the song of birds.

Chapters will be reporting how their projects are going throughout the year on the Audubon Foundation of Texas website. We encourage you to visit them or your local chapter to see what projects they are participating in locally and how you might be able to help grow the flock.
