Audubon Texas asks Texans to go Lights Out During 2024 Peak Fall Migration Period

The 2024 Fall Lights Out, Texas! campaign is officially underway, with millions of migratory birds already making their way across the state. As Fall migration reaches its peak, these numbers are anticipated to grow, highlighting the critical importance of minimizing light pollution and taking other proactive measures to ensure migratory birds’ safe passage.

The Lights Out campaign is supported by a broad coalition of statewide and national partners,  marking a crucial effort in conserving migratory bird populations across the Americas. The campaign encourages residents and businesses to turn off unnecessary lights, particularly in densely populated urban areas, to prevent disorienting birds while they navigate the night sky.

Lights Out, Texas! is a focal point for bird conservation in urban areas as it directly addresses the most significant challenge migratory birds face,” said Lisa Gonzalez, Vice President and Executive Director of Audubon Texas. “But Texans’ commitment should extend beyond the fall season; we are working to actively engage in year-round efforts to raise awareness and drive increased action. By fostering understanding and encouraging proactive measures, we aim to bend the bird curve and reverse the decline of bird populations across the Americas.”

Residents can be Light Smart by following dark skies principles throughout the year. Additionally, modifying and eliminating reflective glass that is unsafe for birds is critical to curbing building collisions, which are estimated to kill up to a billion birds nationally every year

Peak migration runs through October 29, and Fall migration ends around November 30.
