Students at DCAC
Audubon Expedition Science

Expedition Science programs are 4-hour long, expedition field trips led by Audubon staff, designed to strengthen critical thinking skills across multiple disciplines and incorporate hands-on, inquiry-based learning strategies linked with state-mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills objectives for grades pre-K – 12th. We focus on the ecology and habitat of the Canyon, scientific observation and identification skills, and stewardship of natural resources. Students explore adaptations, habitats, communities, and the escarpment ecosystem, documenting their discoveries with scientific tools and journals along the way. $6.50 per student, maximum 60 students. We require 1 teacher or adult chaperone for every 7 students.

Audubon Conservation Workshop

Conservation Workshop programs are 4-hour long, staff-led field experiences that engage students in problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and conservation action, skills critical to building healthy communities and neighborhoods where nature thrives and people prosper. This cross-disciplinary program takes a hands-on, inquiry-based approach linked with state-mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills objectives for grades 3 – 6th across both social studies and science. Focused on the unique ecosystem of southwest Dallas County, students learn about ecology, natural resource stewardship, and participate in an on-site conservation project. $6.50 per student, maximum 60 students. We require 1 teacher or adult chaperone for every 7 students.

Children playing in The Wood

Nature Play in The Wood

The Wood is a nature space dedicated to connecting children to the outside world and the wonders it holds. Studies suggest that contact with nature at a very young age is critical in fostering positive attitudes towards the outdoors and appreciation of nature later in life. Designed with younger ages in mind, The Wood features picnic areas, an arts and crafts grove, space to build habitats and homes, and an Explorer Loop trail for our smallest naturalists who are not quite ready for the full trails. All children must be supervised by an adult, and we encourage parents to share in their children’s play and creativity. Animal costumes, small musical instruments, and building blocks are available to check out at the reception desk for use in The Wood.
